LD Seating, a family-run company with a 30-year legacy of crafting original, timeless seating, is one of the leading manufacturers in the Czech Republic and Europe. They approached us to create an installation for Designblok that not only aligned with the event’s "Youth" theme but also reflected their commitment to sparking creativity through skillful craftsmanship and lasting design.
Our goal was to highlight LD Seating’s components and innovative upholstery fabrics, with a playful twist. The Rocking Horse merges fun and function, resulting in a bold piece that blurs the line between art and craftsmanship. It’s a fresh take that reimagines how creativity and functionality intersect in modern design.
With LD Seating’s massive library of 3D models at our disposal, we handpicked components from seven different chairs to craft the Rocking Horse. To bring the vision together, we turned to Blender, where we designed the initial concept of the Rocking Horse, which was then shared with the team.
We chose LD Seating’s new Venice upholstery fabric for the Rocking Horse. Its stain- and bacteria-resistant properties made it the perfect choice for an installation, ensuring it would hold up under all the hands-on action.
We teamed up with designer Filip Krampla to bring the vision to life. After handing him the concept and initial design, he fine-tuned it, and through thoughtful development and craftsmanship, transformed it into a tactile, functional piece of art.
Designblok visitors had the chance to get up close and personal with the Rocking Horse – even taking it for a ride – while exploring how precision and artistry come together in design. It was all smiles as everyone who interacted with the horse tapped into their inner child and felt pure joy.
Those wanting a deeper dive into LD Seating could take a VR tour of the Baskovice facilities, which offered a behind-the-scenes look at various workstations, including metalworking and upholstery, from the craftsman’s perspective. This gave visitors a unique insight into the detailed production process.
Our photographer Roman Nguyen was on the scene, capturing the event. His shots have landed in several publications and have been shared across Designblok’s social media, showcasing the installation to an even broader audience.
The Rocking Horse stirred up some buzz at Designblok this year, grabbing the attention of a few popular publications. It was featured in the latest printed issue of Reflex, one of the top lifestyle magazines in the Czech Republic, and also appeared in DesignMag, the country’s most-read online magazine, among others.
